WELCOME to the website for NORTHBROOK NURSERY.
My plant hobby gone mad! 🙂
I love plants!
My name is Margaret Bailey and I have lived in Broadstone for 33 years.
I’ve always enjoyed all things horticultural- my parents were keen on growing all sorts, so I grew up growing a few easy annuals in a tiny flowerbed that they allocated me. As an adult, my Hubby and I have always enjoyed tramping around various horticultural shows, small and large..I’m always on the look-out for unusual perennials for the garden.
I’ve been growing and selling mainly perennial plants for over 20 years. I used to just sell once a year at a local 3 day fair and really enjoyed having a stall and meeting people, many of who come back each year to see what different plants I have on offer. I have a small 6×6′ greenhouse at the top of the garden which used to belong to my Mum years ago and which I just can’t bear to get rid of! In the winter it’s packed full with all the tender plants that need protection. A few years ago I was lucky enough to acquire a bigger 12×8′ greenhouse so now there is more room for lots more young plants in the spring and I have nice dry potting/working and office areas. Luxury! Add my radio & a cuppa and life is good.
14 years ago, I had to retire early from my job of 23 years in the NHS and used my new-found free time to try and expand my mini nursery at the top of my garden to sell to the public using mainly the Internet for publicity.
I hope you enjoy browsing through my website.
Have a ramble through Our Garden Year, showing some of the flowers and wildlife that call this garden home.
I have included a page of pests which I have encountered in my own garden.
Lastly there are details on how to contact me and a map to show where we are, as we are tucked away in a quiet residential area.
Come and browse through my plants and perhaps enjoy the garden, especially if it’s a nice day! I will look forward to meeting you!
The Nursery is now **OPEN BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.** Please contact me to arrange a time to visit.

Well done Margaret – I wish you lots of success. It is really you – Mavis
I ran my own specialist nursery for 11 years until ill-health dictated I close. They were the best years of my life. My book – Kindle & Amazon – ‘The Haphazard Gardener’ is a nostalgic memoir of the garden and the plants grown within + a biography of my parents Gay & Arthur Hellyer (one of the leading horticultural authors of the last century – in whose garden I worked and from where I propagated the plants for sale in the nursery. Good Luck with your nursery.
